Application Process


The application period for the Scholarship/Ambassadorship program is now open! Please contact Jaymie Takeshita via e-mail at jaymietake@gmail.com to request an application form!

Nanka Wakayama Kenjinkai offers seven scholarship awards to high school graduates who will be attending college or university and whose family members emigrated from Wakayama-ken.  Additional scholarships for perfect four-year attendance record and financial aid are also available. 

All interested scholarship applicants will also be eligible for selection to the Student Ambassador Program, which provides students with an opportunity to travel to Wakayama, Japan, to learn more about their family roots and Japanese culture.  The program consists of a 2-week home stay during the following summer.  The Student Ambassador Program requests that the family of the student participating in this program host a Japanese exchange student from Wakayama-ken should the Wakayama Prefectural Government choose to send such a student.  Please have a parent sign the application form, if you would like to participate in the Student Ambassador Program.

Academic performance and extracurricular achievements will serve as the basis for determining scholarship recipients and Student Ambassadors.   

Each applicant is requested to submit the following documents:

1.  Completed and signed application  (Section in application requesting the name of relative(s) from Wakayama-ken and their town of origin must be filled out).
2.  A brief essay written by applicant on how this scholarship will be beneficial
3.  Official transcript
4.  Official SAT or ACT scores
5.  If applying for the perfect attendance award, attach an attendance record from your school.
6.  If applying for the Student Ambassador Program, please submit a brief essay describing your interest in visiting Wakayama, Japan.  This application also requires a parent signature.

Other requirements:

1.  Recipients must attend our awards ceremony, or send a representative to receive their scholarship.  Scholarships will NOT be mailed.
2.  Applications must be postmarked by deadline.  No late applications will be accepted.  No reminder calls or e-mails will be made.
3.  All requested official documents must be official (i.e. attendance records from your school's attendance office, official transcripts submitted in a sealed envelope, SAT scores with College Board headings, ACT scores with ACT testing agency headings)
